Ayla: The Daughter of War (Turkish: Ayla) is a 2017 South Korean-Turkish drama directed by Can Ulkay. It was selected but not nominated as the Turkish Entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.
Turkey sends a brigade to South Korea after a UN distress call when North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950. Sergeant Süleyman, one of the brigade’s soldiers, finds a young daughter whose mother and father were killed on the battlefield. He nicknames Ayla for finding her in the moonlight. The two become friends despite the language barrier, but break up when Süleyman has to go home.
